Rebel  X

 Mariah  (Deceased)

PFO Twilight Spirit

Born April 17, 2010

Spirit is most definitely Rebel's girl. Dense, full wool coverage. A personality that is second to none.

Spirit was a breech cria & needed to be pulled by the vet. She was born at 8:30 P.M. The vet stated that she had never seen a living breech birth, either the cria has died before delivery or dies of oxygen deprivation during delivery. Her mother passed away the day after Spirit was born. It is believed that she had a hole in the uterus & that the placenta slipped through into the abdominal wall.

We were able to milk Mariah & bottle feed Spirit for the first 24 hours after birth. After Mariah passed away, we bottle fed her with a mixture we have used in the past. Feedings every two hours during the day and night. It also rained on & off for the first few days. At night, I would walk out into the dark pasture, call her name, hear her answer & have her run in to be fed. During the first week, she followed me as I fed the llamas in the other pastures. AND NO, she was never allowed in the house.

A week after Spirit's birth, Windy delivered Bella (this was Windy's first cria). Within days Windy took on Spirit as her own. We supplemented Spirit for a few days but she would finally refused the bottle & we were able to sleep.

Notes from the first week of Spirit's life:

Saturday-

Mariah was humming in the morning, started passive labor around 9:30. By 2:00 SHE was exhausted, laying on her side. Many phone calls & work later, Dr. Skillman came out. The BREECH cria, Twilight Spirit,  was delivered by her at 8:30 PM. It was the first breech Dr Skillman has delivered that was alive. Mom still did not look well.

At mid night I had time to take a shower and get the spit off me.

Sunday-

Spirit nursed for the first time at 6 AM. Mariah's breathing was not good. Every two hours I got  Mariah up, walked her, & had the cria nurse. Around 1 PM things got worse. Mariah sounded awful and would go into a death pose. Dr Skillman came out for three hours, left at 7 PM. Mariah died at 11 PM.

Cria bottle fed every 3 hours overnight

Monday-

Brought a female from a neighboring ranch home. She had lost her cria a few days earlier. We tried to graft the two with no success.

Bottle feeding every 2-4 hours Beautiful little girl.

Tuesday-

Dave took care of Spirit most of the day while I was gone

Wednesday-

Spirit has been hanging out with the female from the other ranch. She does not let Spirit nurse, but at least she has company.

 - Dave let me sleep the last two nights & he has fed. Boy, did I need that. What a sweet guy.

Since then-

Windy gave birth to a little girl, PFO Moonlight Bella Coola. Within a few day Windy took on Spirit & allows her to nurse too. Spirit still gets supplemental bottles, though she often refuses them.
